The total value of export of footwear of footwear manufacturing establishments in Vietnam has increased continuously over the years. Specifically, footwear exports in 2011 are $6.5 billion, $7.3 billion in 2012, $8.4 billion in 2013, $10.3 billion in 2014, $12 billion in 2015 and 2016 with $13 billion. In the past six years, footwear exports have brought in $57.5 billion.

The statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs show that the footwear export cycle usually starts to grow in the second quarter and reaches the highest level in the third quarter. In 2016, the export of this type of product reached an average of $1.08 billion a month.

The United States has always been the leading importer of Vietnamese footwear, accounting for about 30% of the total footwear export turnover of the country, accounting for 11% of the total export turnover of the country to this market.

In 2016, the US is the largest importer of footwear from Vietnam with a turnover of US $4.48 billion, up 10% from that of 2015. The second largest market is China with a turnover of $904.9 million, followed by Belgium with $825.4 million, Germany with $764.7 million and Japan with $674.9 million.

In particular, the EU and the US are the two largest markets for Vietnamese footwear. With the signing of the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the outlook for footwear exports is expanding.

The Vietnamese footwear industry has a long history of development and is one of the export-oriented industries, contributing significantly to the country's economy. From the point of production only for domestic consumption, in 1992, the leather shoe making factories started to export 5 million USD, now contributes up to 10% of GDP in the country.

Data from the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (LEFASO) shows that Vietnam is among the top four countries in terms of volume after China, India and Brazil, and is the second largest country of footwear export in the world in terms of value, after China. Vietnam's footwear products have been exported to more than 50 countries.

However, Vietnam's footwear is mostly outsourced to foreign countries, and the domestic industry itself is still weak due to its limited ability to design and control materials. Although contributing tens of billions of dollars in nationwide export turnover each year, but this industry has not been paid much attention and investment which are worthy of its potential.
